Sellers Residence Hall

Description

This residence hall was constructed in 1966, and named after Professor John Sellers who was the head of the Department of Chemistry between 1958 and 1964. Sellers is open to both first year and upperclass students, and was renovated in 2024 to provide modern amenities to student residents.

Namesake Biography

John A. Sellers, Professor of Chemistry, was born on August 23, 1896, in Fostoria, Ohio to Andrew and Ella Whitmore Sellers. Prof. Sellers earned his education in the field of chemistry from Manchester College and the University of Illinois. Prior to earning his Ph.D. in Chemistry, Sellers was a teacher in rural schools in Seneca County, Ohio and school principal in Topeka, Indiana. He became associate professor of chemistry at Eastern Michigan University in 1929 until 1948 when he became professor of chemistry, a position held until he became head of the department. He remained head of the department until his untimely death in 1961. Prof. Sellers was active in many organizations including membership at the congregational church, the American Chemical Society, American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the Ypsilanti Kiwanis International.
