The Smart Physical Plant houses offices, the grounds, custodial, carpentry, plumbing, welding and electrical offices and a warehouse for delivery and storage.
Namesake Biography
William H. Smart came to Eastern Michigan University in 1961 as a student. He earned his bachelors degree in economics in 1965, and while a student, he worked in the food service department on campus. Following graduation, he went to Michigan State University for a year to study in the school of hotel and restaurant management. In 1966, Smart returned to Eastern Michigan as a unit manager in the food services department, working in the new Phelps-Sellers and Walton-Putnam residence halls. He was promoted to food service manager and then in 1974, changed career direction when he accepted the position of employee relations manager in the Personnel Office. In 1976, he was appointed associate director of the physical plant and was named director in 1977. He earned his masters degree in higher education administration from EMU in 1972. During the early part of his tenure as director of the Physical Plant, his focus was on energy conservation and cost containment. Under his leadership, the University won the governor's first Energy Management Award in 1980, for the most successful Total Energy Management Program at any state institution. William Smart retired from EMU on January 31, 2000.
