Namesake Biography

Daniel Putnam, born January 8, 1824, in South Lyndeboro, New Hampshire, to Israel and Ruth Sargent Putnam. He was educated in the New Hampton Academy and Dartmouth College in New Hampshire, where he received his A.B. in 1851 and M.A. in 1853. Additionally, Putnam received an honorary L.L.D. from the University of Michigan in 1897. He married Sarah E. Smith of New Hampton July 27, 1852. He taught for a short time at the New Hampton School and in Vermont. He was a professor at Kalamazoo College beginning in 1854 to 1858 and again from 1865 to 1867. Putnam helped organize public school in Kalamazoo, and was superintendent for one year of the Kalamazoo county schools. He was a professor at the Michigan State Normal College in Ypsilanti from 1868-1906, and for three years he was acting president of the institution. He was also the President of Michigan State Teachers Association, the Baptist Convention of Michigan and for twenty-five years Chaplain of Asylum for the Insane in Kalamazoo. Putnam's activities also included alderman and Mayor of Ypsilanti, author, and elementary psychologist. Daniel Putnam died at his home in Ypsilanti, July 29, 1906.
