Tupelo Gum Trees in a Cypress swamp. The gum trees are like Cypress Tree's with flared bases and are relative in size but they do not have flutes like Cypress Trees. They commonly grow in swamps and floodplains in the Southern United States. With the highest concentration of geothermal features in the park, the Upper Geyser Basin includes the Old Faithful Geyser, Castle Geyser, Grand Geyser, Daisy Geyser, and Riverside Geyser. Yellowstone National Park sits on top of a the Yellowstone Hotspot, a volcanic region of molten lava under the mantle of the earth, causing this region of the country to have a tremendous amount of geothermal activity. The image shows the steam coming out of the geysers and hot spots on the landscape, which is mostly barren from all of the minerals that are pushed to the surface with the boiling ground water. Mt. Shasta in California. Part of the Cascades Mountain Range, Mt. Shasta is the second tallest stratovolcano in the range at 14,179'. The range reaches from Washington through Oregon to Northern California for over 700 miles along the Pacific coast. The volcano and surrounding areas are managed by the U.S. Forest Service within the Shasta-Trinity National Forest. The landscape surrounding the volcano is hilly and covered with grasses and evergreen trees. The picture was most likely taken in the winter due to all of the snowpack on the mountain. Constructed for the 1909 Alaska Yukon Pacific Exposition, the Forestry Building at the University of Washington was made of unhewn fir logs taken from Snohomish County forests. The building was razed in 1931 after the logs deteriorated from insect invasion and the University of Washington Husky Union Building was constructed in its place. The Forestry Building was designed to not look like a log cabin, but to utilize architectural lines and designs with mostly natural materials. The image looks down on the main floor from the second story balcony.
