Class of 1887 and Class of 1894 Markers

In front of Old Main stood two boulders, gifts of the classes of 1887 and 1894:

These monuments stand today on the Old Main quadrangle.

The “Class of ‘94” marker includes the words “Fit via vi,” a line from Virgil’s Aeneid translated by Classics Professor Benjamin D’Ooge as “Energy wins the way.”

Another marker on the Quad commemorates the organization of the Michigan Educational Association, which took place in Old Main on October 12, 1852.
