Description
-
Wawona Tunnel tree in Yosemite National Park in California. The tree was carved out in 1881 to enlarge an existing fire scar and the tree itself stood for almost a century until it fell in 1969 following a heavy snowfall. It was 26 feet in diameter when it fell and is estimated to have been 2,300 years old. Two men sitting in a wooden wagon pulled by two horses are traveling through the trees base, giving perspective to its size. The tree is surrounded by other large trees, but it dominates the landscape.
