    Ruins of a cliff dwelling in Arizona. The remains of the houses sit underneath a large rock ledge that protects the house from the elements. A steep drop-off can be seen below the house in the foreground and a large opening can be seen above the drop-off, presumably where a wall from the house used to be.

  • Arizona. Bellemont Station. Jerked beef on fence

    Bellemont Station in Bellemont, Arizona. The station is a vernacular building with two front entrances and three windows. Two additions can be seen on the side of the buildings and rock lined walkways lead to the main entrance. The landscape is flat with sparse vegetation. A small farm and house can be seen in the background. Power Lines cross over the top of the building.

    Canyon Diablo in Arizona. The canyon has been carved by the Little Colorado river at the bottom of the valley and the rocky landscape appears to have been cut into shelves. The landscape is flat until the canyon starts and mountains can be seen in the background.

    Rocky landscape in Arizona. It is noted there is a lava flow that can be seen in the valley with the mesa behind it. This area appears to be arid based on the sparse vegetation found on the hills and the plateau in the background. Power lines cross over the landscape next to the roadway.

    Sugar Pines near Flagstaff, Arizona. The pines appear to have been planted in somewhat straight rows across the landscape and are all relatively the same age, based on their similar heights. Sugar Pines are the tallest and largest evergreen trees in the United States and are native to the Pacific coast regiion of the country.The landscape is rocky and covered with sparse vegetation. The picture was taken from a moving car.

    The Rio Puerco Barranca near Winslow, Arizona. A barranca is a narrow, winding river gorge and the river can be seen cutting through the flat, barren landscape. Railroad tracks can be seen in the foreground and the image was taken out of the window of a train car. People can be seen standing on the tracks looking out over the landscape.

    Pinyon trees in Arkansas Valley, Colorado. The Pinyon tree is a species of evergreen that is well-adapted to arid climates in the southwest and Colorado regions of the United States. The large trees dot the landscape and grow on the steep mountain face. Large boulders surround the trees and dead timbers are scattered on the ground.

The professor stands at the front of the classroom by the blackboard, which has different geometric designs on it.
  • Ash deposits and block showing impact. Northside Kilauea. 1921

    Ash deposits after an eruption of Kilauea in Hawaii in 1921. An umbrella has been placed next to a rock in the soil layers to show size perspective and how the rock caused a crater in the top soil until it was eventually filled in with more ash. The ash layers have been compounded and now appear to have loose, rocky striations. A tree grows on top of the embankment.

    Image of an Ash Tree coming into bloom in June of 1926 in Gilmanton, New Hampshire. The tree is sprouting small buds which will eventually opened into leaves. Large boulders surround the tree and vegetation grows up between the boulders in the foreground. A small town can be seen in the valley at the base of the hill, as more hills rise in the background. It is noted the house will be a brick veneer style, is located on Normal Street, and was constructed in 1912. The picture shows the beginning stages of the balloon framing for the exterior walls of the house. The photograph also shows the poured concrete foundation. Several neighboring houses can be seen in the picture, along with the Ypsilanti Water Tower.     A sandy bar joins the Sleeping Bear Bluffs and Empire, Michigan. A small shack can be seen on the shoreline in the foreground. Dune grass and trees cover the landscape of both the mainland and the bluffs. A bare sand dune can be seen in the background but most of the dunes are covered with trees.

    Photograph of a barn and log cabin. The small log cabin is a story and a half. The cabin is constructed of hewn timbers, with chinking filling the cracks in between the logs. A windmill and a gambrel roof barn stands on the property to the right and the landscape is covered with grass and small bushes.     Photograph of a cattle farm with multiple out buildings and barns. The large two and a half story Upright and Wing farm house stands at the front of the farm, facing the road. Four different outbuildings and barns can be seen behind the house. These buildings appear to be an english style or a slight variation of that style. A large gambrel roof barn stands behind the grazing pasture where the cows are, and a massive stack of hay is constructed next to the barn. Jefferson would often use the same negative to create a lantern slide as well as a mounted stereographic card.
