  • Cactus. Bad Lands. North Dakota. July 1924

    A close-up image of a cactus in the Badlands of North Dakota. It is noted that the picture was taken in July of 1924. The badlands of North Dakota are incorporated into Theodore Roosevelt National Park, but Badlands National Park is a separate park in South Dakota. The cactus is in bloom and is surrounded by other low-growing vegetation.

    Desert landscape 45 miles Southeast of Caliente, California. The landscape is rocky and arid with little vegetation. Mountains rise in the background and rail lines can be seen in the foreground. A railcar sits on one of the lines and a wooden platform sits on the ground between the two lines.
  • California desert. Barstow. Making tree grow by constant watering

    Trees in Barstow, California. It is noted that the trees are only growing because they receive constant watering. A wagon can be seen behind the trees and the landscape appears to be very flat and relatively arid because there is little vegetation.
  • California desert. In Tehachapi Pass

    Tehachapi Pass in the California desert. The landscape is mountainous and arid with little vegetation and rocky soil. Trees grow in groups on the hills and there is no underbrush. A fence can be seen in the foreground at the bottom of the picture, but there are no buildings.
  • California desert. Mojave desert. Lake Playa (sand & sagebrush)

    Lake Playa in the Mojave Desert, California. There is no water, only sand and sagebrush. The landscape is sandy, flat, and arid with little vegetation. Mountains can be seen in the background and powerlines have been strung next to the roadway in the foreground.

    The desert near Barstow, California. The landscape is extremely flat and sandy with large sand dunes rising in the background. There is no vegetation and no water. Powerlines have been strung next to the road but there are no buildings.

Large ropes tie the ship to the dock where men can be seen walking next to the ship and sitting in the shadow of the building. A small tugboat can be seen in the foreground, giving perspective to the size of the M.S. Dollar.

    Desert landscape South of Mojave, California. The landscape is rocky and arid with little vegetation, only sage. Mountains can be seen in the background and power lines can be seen in the foreground. It is noted that the cement wall at the bottom of the picture is used to protect the railroad line from washing out.

    Desert landscape South of Tehachapi Pass in California. The land is rocky and arid with little vegetation. Yucca and sage plants are common in this area. The mountains rise in the background and power lines have been strung next to the roadway.

    Looking South over the Great Valley in Central Valley, California. An orange grove can be seen in the foreground and mountains rise in the background. It is noted that the orange grove is irrigated and has been planted in rows across the valley. The ground is rocky and arid with little vegetation.

    Typical row houses in San Francisco, California. Following Queen Anne and Italianate architectural styles, the row houses are several stories tall and built into the slope of the hill. All of the houses have garages below the houses with separate front entrances.

    Photograph of what appears to be a streetscape with a large building. The building appears to have a large typanum and denticulation. This unmounted stereograph is overexposed making the subjects of the photograph difficult to see.   • California. Mt. Shasta

    Mt. Shasta in California. Part of the Cascades Mountain Range, Mt. Shasta is the second tallest stratovolcano in the range at 14,179'. The range reaches from Washington through Oregon to Northern California for over 700 miles along the Pacific coast. The volcano and surrounding areas are managed by the U.S. Forest Service within the Shasta-Trinity National Forest. The landscape surrounding the volcano is hilly and covered with grasses and evergreen trees. The picture was most likely taken in the winter due to all of the snowpack on the mountain.   • California. Wawona Tunnel tree, front view

    Wawona Tunnel tree in Yosemite National Park in California. The tree was carved out in 1881 to enlarge an existing fire scar and the tree itself stood for almost a century until it fell in 1969 following a heavy snowfall. It was 26 feet in diameter when it fell and is estimated to have been 2,300 years old. Two men sitting in a wooden wagon pulled by two horses are traveling through the trees base, giving perspective to its size. The tree is surrounded by other large trees, but it dominates the landscape.

  • Canon City. Grape Creek in flood. Note muddy water

    Grape Creek in Canon City, Colorado. It is noted that the river is high due to recent flooding and the water is more muddy. A man walks across the river on large boulders and the water rushes around the boulders. A steep, rocky cliff face can be seen in the background and there is little vegetation growing along the banks of the river.

    Grape Creek near Canon City, Colorado. The river flows next to a large cliff face that is jagged and rocky. Rocks and boulders have been piled on the banks of the river and it is noted the picture was taken at the end of the path. Grape Creek is the beginning of Royal Gorge and is a vital river for the area.

    A four over four house in Canon City, Colorado. It is noted that the house is white with a green roof and it is a common type in the town. A large front porch is shielded from the sun by large canvas sheets and a wrought iron fence surrounds the property. Trees have planted beside the dirt road and offer shade for the paved sidewalk.

    The filtered water basin at the water works in Canon City, Colorado. The water is purified and stored in the basin for use by the town and surrounding areas. Mountains can be seen in the background and the landscape is rocky with little vegetation.
  • Canyon (possibly Bryce Canyon) with interesting rock formations

    Landscape of an interesting canyon with unique rock formations. It is noted this picture was possibly taken in Bryce Canyon National Park in Utah. The spire-like rock formations stick up from the bottom of the canyon and the soft rock walls are slowly being eroded, exposing more of the spires. Trees grow in the bottom of the canyon and on top of the rock wall in the background. Rock layers can be seen in the rock wall and on the spires.

    Photograph of a three story building in Panama in 1926. Several cars are parked on the side of the street in front of the building and trees conceal a portion of the facade. The structure appears to have a third story balcony with an open air porch. Arched entrances cover the front and side facade of the building on the first floor, which was most likely used by vendors.     Photograph of a Cascade Mountain forest in Oregon. Large boulders have fallen from the mountains above and are piled along the hillside. A steel guard rail can be seen in the foreground. Some of the trees are missing limbs because they were likely surrounded by other trees before the rock slide, meaning the only energy invested in their growth went to their tops.     A prospector's cabin in the Cedar Creek (Ark) Valley in Colorado. The cabin is a one or two room log cabin with v-shaped notches in the logs and heavy chinking between the timbers that make up the walls. The cabin has a tin roof and it appears to be abandoned. Large mountains can be seen in the background and they are covered with trees, grasses, and scrub bushes.
  • Ceiba at Maraianao, Cuba. To northwest

    Ceiba tree in Maraianao, Cuba. This type of tree commonly grows in tropical areas and is distinguished by its tall, branchless trunk which spreads out into a large canopy of branches and leaves at the top. The tree stands taller than all of the other vegetation surrounding it and sits on top of a ridge next to the road. Power lines can be seen in the foreground.
