The Story

A poor Toymaker who lives with his mother, labors day and night to
make a living. While he sleeps, his toys, including the Best Doll, the
Rag Doll, the Clown, and the Wooden Soldier, come alive and hold
their revels in his workshop. This Toymaker is secretly in love with a
Princess, whom he has seen riding by his window. One day the Emperor
sends forth a proclamation that he will bestow his daughter’s hand
upon any Toymaker in the land who succeeds in making a toy fhat
- will please his capricious little son. The Princess vows to break every
toy in the land, so the toys imprison her in a cupboard. Some days
later, the Emperor and Prince arrive to inspect the toys. The Prince
chooses the ragged and one-armed soldier. The Emperor bestows his
daughter’s hand upon the Toymaker, and there is great rejoicing.
