Gorton graduated from the Michigan State Normal School in 1892 at the age of 21, and immediately joined the Physical Sciences department faculty. Starting his career at the Normal as an instructor, Gorton eventually went on to receive a Ph.D. from the University of Berlin, Germany, and then worked as a professor at the Normal until his retirement in 1941.
