Community Stories

The University Archives and Center for Oral History Research have branched their work out past campus borders into the Ypsilanti community to record the voices of the city in which EMU is deeply nestled in. Now, COHR is beginning to extend its reach further into Washtenaw County.

In June of 2023 the EMU Aerie was taken to Ypsi Pride in Depot Town to document the stories of LGBTQ community members with short-form oral history interviews. The event ended up being so successful that the University Archives was invited back in 2024, where even more of these stories were collected.
In August of 2023, the EMU Aerie ventured out to Depot Town once again, this time for the Ypsilanti Bicentennial Celebration. Ypsilantians, whether long-time residents or new ones, shared their experiences about the city and what makes it so special.
