How to Facilitate a Records Transfer:

Effective May 19, 2023, the University Data & Records Management Administrative Policy superceeds all previous policies for the retention, destruction and transfer of University records. The Policy outlines the scope of collecting, the process for desctruction, and the role of each record creator has in creating, retaining and either transferring or disposing of records.

The committee for Data & Records Management completed a schedule in accordance with federal, state, and local laws. The Schedule outlines the most commonly generated records by category, the originating office(s) and the length of time that records should be retained. The format of the record (digital or analog) does not matter.

The University Archives welcomes transfers of PERMANENT records that do not need to remain in the originating office. Please review the Schedule to determine if your records are eligible for transfer. If you have questions, please do not hesitate to email us at lib_archives@emich.edu or if you have questions concerning data retention at EMU, please email data_retention@emich.edu

As a reminder, any request for university documents should be made via the EMU's Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) process.
